🚀 3. Quick Start Guide: 5 Minutes to a Faster Store

Want to see immediate performance gains? This guide walks through the essential steps to enable the most impactful features of the JaJuMa Ultimate Image Optimizer for Magento 2. Follow these steps to get WebP images, lazy loading, and automated AVIF conversion running in minutes.

3.1 Step 1: Enable the Extension

This is the master switch that activates all optimization features.

  1. Navigate to JaJuMa > Ultimate Image Optimizer > Configuration.
  2. In the General section, set Enable Image Optimization to Yes.
  3. Click Save Config.

3.2 Step 2: Enable WebP On-The-Fly Conversion

This will immediately start serving smaller, faster WebP images to compatible browsers. Serving next-gen formats like WebP is one of the quickest ways to improve your site's loading speed and Core Web Vitals scores. For more details, see the Performance Configuration guide.

  1. In the configuration menu, go to the Performance > WebP Conversion Configurations section.
  2. Set Enable WebP Conversion to Yes.
  3. Set WebP On-The-Fly Conversion to Yes.
  4. For Conversion Tool, select GD if available. It's the easiest to configure and works well on most servers.
  5. Set WebP Quality to 75. This is a great starting point that balances quality and file size.
  6. Click Save Config.

⚠️ Warning: Enabling on-the-fly conversion may temporarily cause slightly slower page loads and higher server load the very first time an image is requested, as it needs to be converted. Once an image is converted, it is cached and served instantly. To avoid this initial impact, you can rely solely on cron-based conversion (see Step 4).

3.3 Step 3: Enable Native Lazy Loading

Lazy loading prevents off-screen images from loading until the user scrolls to them. This dramatically improves the initial page load time and your Largest Contentful Paint (LCP) score by prioritizing visible content.

  1. Go to the Performance > Lazy Loading & Miscellaneous section.
  2. Set Enable Native Lazy Loading to Yes.
  3. Click Save Config.

💡 Pro Tip: By default, lazy loading applies to all images. For optimal LCP, you should later configure the Native Lazy Loading Blacklist to exclude images that are visible "above-the-fold" (without scrolling), such as your logo or main homepage banner. You can find this setting under Performance > Lazy Loading & Miscellaneous.

3.4 Step 4: Set Up Automated AVIF Conversion (The Power Feature)

AVIF offers the best image compression available, resulting in the smallest possible file sizes. Because AVIF conversion is resource-intensive, it runs in the background via cron jobs to find and convert all your existing images without impacting your live site's performance.

  1. Configure Media Scanning:

    • Go to the General > Scan Media section.
    • Set Enable Image Scan to Yes.
    • For Scan Schedule, enter 0 0 * * * to scan your media library once a day at midnight. (See this online cron editor for help). Ultimate Image Optimizer - Scan Media Configuration
  2. Configure Conversion Cron:

    • Go to the General > Optimization by Cron section.
    • Set Enable Conversion Cron Job to Yes.
    • For Optimization Schedule, enter */5 * * * * to check for and convert new images every 5 minutes. Ultimate Image Optimizer - Optimization Cron Configuration
  3. Enable AVIF:

    • Go to the Performance > AVIF Conversion Configurations section.
    • Set Enable AVIF Conversion to Yes. The default settings for the conversion tool (cavif) and quality are a great starting point. Ultimate Image Optimizer - AVIF Images Configuration
  4. Click Save Config.

Your server will now begin working in the background to create ultra-efficient AVIF versions of your images. For more details on cron job settings, see the General Settings Guide.

3.5 Step 5: Flush Caches and Verify

To ensure your changes are visible on the frontend, you must clear Magento's cache.

  1. Go to System > Tools > Cache Management.
  2. Select the Page Cache and any other invalid caches, and click Flush Magento Cache.
  3. Visit your storefront in a modern browser like Chrome or Firefox.
  4. Open the Developer Tools (F12 or Ctrl+Shift+I), go to the Network tab, and filter by "Img".
  5. Refresh the page. You should now see images in the "Type" column being served as webp or avif, confirming the optimization is active!

You've now enabled the core performance features. To fine-tune every aspect of your site's image delivery, explore the detailed Configuration sections of this documentation, starting with the General Configurations.
